This institution belonging to the region of Schleswig-Holstein has existed since 1996 in the town centre of Eckernförde. It was established as a successor to the former Artists’ Centre in Selk near Schleswig and was opened officially in 1998. Prior to that, the building in Otte Street was redesigned with funds from the regional foundation for culture to be used as an artists’ centre. The town has placed the building at the disposal of the sponsoring society which is responsible for tendering scholarships and processing applications. At the present time, the sponsoring society has 60 members. The chairperson is the officer for culture of the town of Eckernförde, Sven Wlassack.

The house provides a basis for scholarship holders with the requisite qualifications in the fields of the fine arts, literature and music. A selection committee with a rotating membership meets after the closing date for applications and decides on the granting of two 6-month, three 4-month and four 3-month scholarships for the following year. The artistically qualified members of the board, Jutta Johannsen, Marianne Tralau and Dr. Uwe Beitz, form the selection committee together with 2-4 additional experts (artists, professional journalists, university lecturers) appointed from year to year. The selection committee normally meets early in June to select the scholarship holders for the following year. A representative of the ministry of culture also attends as an ex officio member.
Subject to the necessary financial guarantees from the culture budget of the region of Schleswig-Holstein, each scholarship amounts to 750 Euros per month. 125 Euros of this sum are allocated to the sponsoring society to cover the operating expenses for the 4 studios and the joint exhibition hall. A further 22 Euros per month are deducted to cover the telephone flat rate for which unlimited calls can be made within Germany.
The four studios in the old building in Otte Street measure 52 m˛ to 65 m˛ and each comprises living and working quarters, a kitchen, WC and bathroom, as well as ISDN line. A washing machine in provided for all the studios to share.
